An electrocardiograph (EKG) are a method of recording a heart’s functioning by way of electrical impulses, so that doctors may identify and diagnose heart disease and blood vessel conditions. EKGs are a routine part of pre and post surgical patient treatment and, as well, are standard tests for the elderly and for patients who have a proven history of heart disease. EKG technicians are responsible for recording patient histories, connecting them to a series of electrodes, and then administering the EKG test by way of high-tech heart monitoring equipment. EKG technicians work under the supervision of a cardiologist, and alongside a variety of other medical personnel. It is possible for an EKG technician to advance to other careers in medicine in a number of ways:
Level advancement. Most institutions that hire EKG technicians organize employees according to levels of experience and education, and each level has a particular set of responsibilities. You may take continuing education classes to receive extra credentials that qualify you to move up the ranks from technician, to senior technician, then to a technologist.
Supervisory/management. Once you have a considerable amount of experience and some continuing education credits under your belt, you may apply for positions managing or supervising newer EKG technicians.
Specializations. EKG technicians may train in a variety of specializations that enable them to broaden their expertise, and as a result advance their careers and make more money. Some areas of specialization include Holter monitoring, cardiac catheterization, stress tests, phonocardiography, and vectorcardiography. In most cases, it is not even necessary that an EKG technician attend additional courses to specialize, as much of this training can be received on an on-the-job basis.
Alternative work environments. One way to advance your career as an EKG technician is to seek employment through alternative avenues. You can broaden your horizons by becoming an instructor in an educational facility, or by joining a research team in a laboratory environment.
