This phenomenon is expected to further grow in coming years as Baby Boomers become senior citizens and their hearts suffer the effects of time.

Electrocardiography measures the activity of the heart over a period of time using electrodes that are attached to the patient on the surface of the skin across the chest. The EKG measures regularity of heartbeats as well as the size of the individual chambers and whether any damage is present.

The EKG Technician career is facing years of solid demand that is not likely to abate anytime in the near future. With an average salary of over $30,000, an EKG technician can make a stable living providing a service that is in significant need in the community.

Operating an EKG machine is a skill that requires some degree of advanced training and academic experience. In modern times, the EKG has been a part of medical environments and familiar to many people. But few probably realize the Electrocardiogram (EKG) was actually invented in the Victorian era.

A quick EKG History:

Alexander Muirhead is credited with the invention in 1872 of the EKG when he recorded a patient’s heartbeat using wires attached to his wrist.

British physiologist John Burdon Sanderson introduced the Lippman capillary electrometer to the process soon after Muirhead’s initial discovery.

In turn of the century London, August Waller used a Lippman capillary electrometer attached to a projector as an electrocardiograph. The process allowed the heartbeat to be recorded in real time for the first time.

Willem Einthoven is credited with further developments to the science of EKG while working in the Netherlands around 1903. He invented the string galvanometer that provided a much more sensitive recording of the heartbeat.

In 1924, Willem Einthoven wins the Nobel Prize for the invention of the electrocardiograph.

The history of the EKG continues into the 20th century with many developments taking place that made the device not only one of the most critical components of healthcare management, but one of the most affected by technological innovation. Most of the developments that have taken place in modern times have consisted of improvements that allowed the overall size of the equipment to be reduced from room-size all the way down to portable size.

For more information on the EKG, its use and history, there are numerous academic papers published online at websites for Cyber Essays free term papers. With a little research, any aspiring EKG technician can acquire a more than surface deep understanding of the profession’s history and how it applies to services today.

A career as an EKG Technician is great for the solid pay and stable work environment. It also doesn’t require much in terms of advanced education to secure certification and that means you can get to work with minimal fuss and upfront expenses.

But once you’ve secured a position as an EKG Technician and worked in the job for a period of time, there are less than ample opportunities for advancement without further academic progress. Most experts will recommend EKG Technicians pursue a bachelor’s degree to enhance salary and advancement options. Beyond that, EKG Technicians should also consider MBA admission.

Upward Mobility

At first glance, your response may be: “What would an EKG Technician need with a business administration degree?”

And that’s a legitimate concern. Workers who want to remain below management level will have no need for an MBA experience. However, anyone who would like to rise into a supervisory or management position should have a solid understanding of the business elements that are essential to every operation – whether in a clinic, doctor’s office or hospital setting.

Anyone who has committed and successfully completed an EKG Technician certification program and moved on to obtain a bachelor’s degree, should have no problem mastering the requirements of MBA admission. It doesn’t have to be Harvard Business School for you to receive a benefit from the academic program. There are many programs available that offer instruction in classroom settings, over the Internet or a combination of the two approaches.

What You Get

Many MBA programs offer specific concentrations in Health Care Management. Skills developed in an MBA program with a healthcare focus include the ability to make good business decisions; manage and support lower level workers; implement technology to advance operations; evaluate risks and develop action plans to mitigate vulnerabilities; use knowledge to make timely decisions even when there is limited information available; and understand a broad range of the impacts to business that may occur and how to avoid negative conclusions.

An MBA program broadens an EKG Technician’s understanding of the operation so that business elements may be addressed while the overall mission is maintained. This full knowledge strengthens the operation while ensuring the degree holder is an essential part of day-to-day functions. As a result, for the well-rounded employee, pay will increase and career security ensured to the highest level possible.

But most importantly, an MBA degree is a blueprint for the future. Demand for medical care is expected to substantially grow in coming years as Baby Boomers become senior citizens and begin to deal with various ailments and conditions that come with age. A management level understanding of all the medical and business aspects of this development will poise the degree holder to maximize benefits for patient and provider.

In fact, as the majority of the nation hits old age, medical jobs are expected to increase by up to 20-percent. One of the most popular choices among students is a career as an EKG technician. However, before you begin your career, there are a few things you should know. Here are just five things you should know about EKG training.

EKG Training Does Not Require a Degree

EKG technicians do not have to have a degree. In some cases the technicians may be able to get a job with the only requirements being a high school diploma and an EKG certificate. Those eager to begin work right away may like this option, but it’s important to remember that a degree always leads to a higher salary. However, a certificate can be obtained in half the time, taking only one year to complete.

You Need to Register in Advance

As with any other medical training, you need to register for classes far in advance. With many schools, you will also have to be accepted into the program. This means you do not have time to dilly dally. Apply for a spot as soon as applications are accepted and know ahead of time which schedule you want to get. This will help ensure you not only get accepted to the program, but have a schedule that suits your needs.

There are a Lot of Scholarships Available

Because the medical field is growing, there are lots of scholarships available, so you shouldn’t have to worry about applying on sites like mobiloans.com for cash – especially since funding for school is rarely an emergency. A quick visit to your schools financial aid office or website will give you a complete listing of scholarships and requirements. When combined with grants, you may not have to pay any out of pocket expenses for your education.

Some Schools Offer Job Specific Training

If you want to cut to the chase, you need to seek out schools that offer job specific training. The reason this type of training is so important is that it cuts out unnecessary classes. You won’t have to take a literature course to get a certificate or degree in EKG training at these schools, which can save time and money.

Training Offers More Than EKG Skills

While it may be tempting to get your certificate and jump right into the field, there are a number of reasons a higher level of education is important. Students that opt for a degree will receive training that goes beyond the basics. Students can expect to learn bedside manners and other skills needed to work with patients.

Becoming an EKG technician can be done in as little as one year, but that doesn’t mean it should be. Students who opt for a degree are not only better compensated, but receive much needs skills. Before you search out a school though, remember that it takes more time to get into medical training than other degrees. You should also take advantage of scholarships and schools that offer job specific training.

There’s no need to tell you that EKG technicians play a vital role in healthcare. You know that because you perform those invaluable tasks every day of your working life. You are dedicated to providing your patients with the best care possible. The question is do you provide yourself with quality care as well? All medical providers face certain hazards. You can minimize the risks you face on the job by following these five suggestions.

Wash Your Hands After Every Patient Contact

You’ve heard about the importance of hand washing time and again, but a friendly reminder never hurts. You never know what microorganisms you might pick up from a patient simply with a touch of the hand or other small contact. Thoroughly washing your hands after interacting with any patient protects not only you, but also the patient you will be dealing with next.

Ergonomics for EKG Technicians

As an EKG technician, you spend long hours on your feet. You continually do repeated motions with your wrists. You bend over beds and twist your torso. Each of these actions puts you at risk for work related musculoskeletal disorders. There are some ways to reduce the risks, however.

Take short, frequent breaks of 30 seconds to 3 minutes. During that time do stretches, close your eyes and rest them, take deep, calming breaths to release stress from your body. Take time to adjust beds and tables to the height most comfortable for you to work. Talk to your supervisor about the possibility of staff ergonomics training to help prevent injuries. Because back injuries are one of the most common reasons healthcare personnel miss work, the investment in ergonomics training would benefit everyone concerned.

Follow the Rules

Although some of the healthcare facility’s rules may seem petty and time-consuming, remember, they were put in place for a reason. Don’t take shortcuts that might put your health or safety at risk.

Keep Yourself in Good Physical Condition

You will be less likely to injure yourself if you are in good physical condition. Do your best to maintain a healthy weight, exercise, and get plenty of sleep.

Use Caution When Entering and Leaving the Workplace

Because healthcare personnel often start work early and finish late, you need to pay particular attention when you are arriving at or leaving your workplace. Park in a well lit area. Be aware of what’s happening around you. Have your keys in your hands before you leave the building and make sure you aren’t focused on your cell phone or tablet or other electronics from presta.com until you are safe in your car. You may even want to attach a can of pepper spray to your key ring so it is at hand should you need to defend yourself.

Performing the services of an EKG technician is admirable, important work that you should be proud to do. If you don’t take care of yourself, however, you won’t be able to execute your job. Remember; keep safety first so the people who need you can depend on you for years to come.

Most of the techniques and procedures used in medicine and health care are rather new. A testing instrument in use in the medical history cannot be expected to be in existence after a decade on account of innovation, invention and introduction of new and highly technologically oriented sophisticated testing machines which produce outstanding results. Still we are not satisfied with the performance. It is like an ordinary pencil fifty years ago transforming itself into a gel pen or digital pen nowadays.

Each new decade increases our scientific knowledge and techniques and much of this carries over into the field of medicine. The present day hospitals are equipped with highly trained health care teams who can solve any complex medical problems by detecting the diseases speedily using elaborate and exhaustive equipments and new “wonder” drugs.

Different kinds of testing instruments/techniques in the field of medicine:

The following are the list of some testing instruments and techniques available in the field of medicine:

1. Abdominal sonography: This is used to view the organs and tissues within the abdominal area consisting of liver, pancreas, spleen, gall bladder and kidneys.
2. Vascular ultrasound: This focuses on viewing problems associated with blood flow through the blood vessels.
3. Echocardiography: It is nothing but a sonogram of the heart, its valve function and blood flow.
4. Obstetrics and Gynecological Sonography: This is used to monitor the fetal heart beat, birth defects, or an abnormal fetal heartbeat.
5. Mammography: It is the fastest growing X-ray technician specialty field. Cardiovascular technology is another X-ray technician training career.
6. Diagnostic medical sonography: It requires the ability to perform numerous procedures that result in diagnosing problems in patients
7. Nuclear medicine technology: It is one among the high level of specialty training meant for X-ray technicians.
8. Radiation therapy: This is used to treat cancer found in the human body.

What do you know about EKG technician?

EKG is an acronym for electrocardiographic and the technician in charge of EKG will be entrusted with the responsibility of collecting the data from the patients that will be used by the physicians for analysis. It also includes ultrasound. The EKG technician will be in charge of performing cardiovascular tests on patients by using electrical impulses and transmitting them to a patient’s heart.

Working as one EKG technician is an interesting job in view of the facts that you will be furnishing the vital data about the patients to your physician and the error free and accurate information submitted by you will decide the fate of the patient. Necessarily the physician will have faith on your ability, performance and sound judgment in regard to the statistics and figures you are going to provide him about the patient. You should be proud in as much as you are concerned, that you are one among the various medical professionals responsible for saving precious human lives. Try out Adecco USA temporary staffing services if you want to get started in some sort of position.

Scope for EKG Technicians:

The following are the requisites to become one effective EKG technician:

1. Completion of high school or a GED diploma followed by an associate’s degree;
2. Certification from the Cardiovascular Credentialing International – CCI;
3. You can also choose a continuing education examination leading to the Nationality Registered title of Certified EKG technician;
4. Sufficient work experience.

In case you have an ambition to become one EKG technician, it is possible if you have willingness to update your knowledge and undergo a vigorous training irrespective of your age and the ultimate satisfaction in serving various human lives will be always yours.

An electrocardiograph (EKG) are a method of recording a heart’s functioning by way of electrical impulses, so that doctors may identify and diagnose heart disease and blood vessel conditions. EKGs are a routine part of pre and post surgical patient treatment and, as well, are standard tests for the elderly and for patients who have a proven history of heart disease. EKG technicians are responsible for recording patient histories, connecting them to a series of electrodes, and then administering the EKG test by way of high-tech heart monitoring equipment. EKG technicians work under the supervision of a cardiologist, and alongside a variety of other medical personnel. It is possible for an EKG technician to advance to other careers in medicine in a number of ways:

Level advancement. Most institutions that hire EKG technicians organize employees according to levels of experience and education, and each level has a particular set of responsibilities. You may take continuing education classes to receive extra credentials that qualify you to move up the ranks from technician, to senior technician, then to a technologist.

Supervisory/management. Once you have a considerable amount of experience and some continuing education credits under your belt, you may apply for positions managing or supervising newer EKG technicians.

Specializations. EKG technicians may train in a variety of specializations that enable them to broaden their expertise, and as a result advance their careers and make more money. Some areas of specialization include Holter monitoring, cardiac catheterization, stress tests, phonocardiography, and vectorcardiography. In most cases, it is not even necessary that an EKG technician attend additional courses to specialize, as much of this training can be received on an on-the-job basis.

EKG training courses allow you the opportunity to land a job in a serious technical career with out spending years attending a college or university. Technical schools offer basic and advanced EKG training programs that can get you your EKG certification quickly. This is because a career as an EKG technician does not require a bachelors degree. Technical schools, community colleges and career training schools around the country offered EKG technician training programs that can result in either an Associates degree or certification. Reaching out for an Associates degree will generally take two years to complete.

Typical EKG technician training courses start off with a year of specialized training and cardiovascular technology. While it is possible to land a job as EKG technician without a degree, clinics or hospitals still require that an employee must have at least a high school diploma or GED, and have an EKG training certificate. You can earn your training certificate in as little as one year of schooling.

Technical training courses offer hands-on training. Hands-on training is a great way for students to learn job-related skills in the least amount of time possible. Attending a school for job specific training allows for technical schools to cut out any unnecessary classes or courses that are not needed specifically for the career at hand. EKG training schools will teach students how to use standard choreographic equipment, communicate through medical terminology and will also teach students to understand the importance of patient safety and other medical ethics. EKG technician schools will also instill in you as a student the absolute importance of being able to keep a patient’s mind at ease while they are undergoing any procedures, tests or exams while in a physicians of office. You will also learn the importance of being able to work together in teams along with the importance of being able to follow directions closely.

On-the-job EKG technician training is also a possibility. In most cases to receive on-the-job training will last between four and six weeks. Many times individuals who are able to receive on-the-job training will often times opt to and roll and an extra academic EKG training program to receive further basic training and increase their chances of joining a health care team, allowing them a higher earning a salary along with more job responsibility.

As in most medical careers, technology changes rapidly. As better treatment processes are developed and new machinery is purchased by hospitals and doctors offices is that your responsibility as an EKG technician to enroll in further education classes to keep an up-to-date skill set in your field. For this reason, continuing education is required through out the entire career of an EKG technician. Initial education as well as continued education is not only important for job placement, but also plays a large role in the expected ekg technician earnings one can expect to make each year.

If you’re considering enrolling in some kind of EKG training classes, is important to try and find a school that offers a program for you that is close to home. Many times students feel the need to attend the most extravagant or most well-known school to feel that they are getting the best education possible for their future career. However, it is more important that you as a student or able to finish what you start. Staying close to home will eliminate some of the added stresses and pressures of moving away from home to attend a college or school. Finish your career training at an accredited school no matter where it is located and you will find that you will receive the same education and training as you would anywhere else in the country.

This machine will then monitor the impulses for 24 hours. After the 24 hour period, the technician will printout the results and send it to the physician for the doctors interpretation.
EKG Technician Career Overview

EKG technicians are professionals that work with equipment that produce an electrocardiograph of the patient’s heart activity. EKG is used for a lot of reasons and one of these is to help in diagnosing a patient whether he or she has a heart ailment or not. The job and duty of the EKG technician is to operate the machine. When performing an EKG procedure, the EKG technician will first apply a cream on the skin of the patient. He or she will then place the electrodes attached to the machine on the patient’s arms, legs and chest. The electrocardiograph machine is then turned on and readings are acquired. It is significant for these EKG technicians to make sure that there will be no technical errors or otherwise the reading may be affected and the doctor may derive a wrong diagnosis. Once the procedure is finished, the electrodes are removed slowly.

The average median EKG salary is close to $40,000. If one is employed in metropolitan areas they may receive a much higher salary. Florida has one of the largest number of EKG technicians employed in the United States since much of its population consists of senior citizens that require the services of EKG technicians.
